Week 7 Wrap – Sportsbooks Take a Beating
Week 7 wasn’t a good one for the sportsbooks but chances are if you placed some NFL bets this weekend you made quite a bit of cash as all of the big favorites covered the point spread. For those of you that don’t know the majority of bettors place their bets on the favorites but luckily for the books the underdogs cover quite a bit.
Let’s have a look at the games that kicked the sportsbook’s asses.
New Orleans Saints 46
Miami Dolphins 34
The biggest non-primetime betting game of week 7 was the New Orleans Saints playing the Miami Dolphins. The Saints at -6 had 70% of the action so when Drew Brees and the Saints mounted a huge comeback, or if you prefer the Dolphins choked in the second have the sportsbooks took a huge hit. If you bet the Saints on the pointspread and taken the Over in the game total, congratulations on winning your bets.
Indianapolis Colts 42
St. Louis Rams 6
The game the books were the most offside on (offside means most of the bets are on one team leaving the books exposed to lose a lot) was the Colts versus the Rams, the betting line on this game opened at 13 but by game time was 14 or 14.5 at some sportsbooks. This was a gift, the Rams have a horrible offense and the Peyton Manning and the Colts have been unstoppable this season. Because of this, 93% of all the money bet was on the Colts. The Colts won and 93% of the bettors won.
New England Patriots 35
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 7
After last week’s drubbing of the Titans we knew there would be many bettors who would pick the Patriots this week. The line was another high one at 14.5 but that didn’t stop the NFL bettors as 83% of the money was on the Patriots in this one. The Patriots covered the spread in the first quarter and never looked back.
Green Bay Packers 31
Cleveland Browns 3
After a slow 1st quarter, the Green Bay Packers offense got rolling scoring 31 unanswered points to beat the Browns 31-3. A few more NFL bettors felt confident in the Browns at +7 than they had with the other bottom dwelling teams but still Browns wagers only accounted for 24% of the action on the game.
San Diego Chargers 37
Kansas City Chiefs 7
The Chargers took advantage of a shaky day from Matt Cassel to beat the Chiefs 37-7. The Chiefs strong play of late earned them 36% of the action but the Chargers had this game covered before the first quarter was through.
