Week 5 Late Game Wrap

New England 17 – Denver 20
The student beats the master, as Josh McDaniel’s Denver Broncos beat his mentor Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots in OT. The legend of Kyle Orton continues to grow, with Denver down seven in the fourth, Orton drove the Broncos on a 98 yards 4th quarter drive and topped off the drive with an 11-yard strike to Brandon Marshall that forced overtime. In the overtime period, Orton and the Broncos calmly moved the ball into New England territory where Matt Prater kicked the game winning field goal.
Kyle Orton will never be confused for John Elway and this Broncos team is not the Orange Crush of the 70’s but they are 5-0. The last time a Broncos team started the season with five straight wins was the Elway led 1998 Super Bowl Champions. The underdog Broncos won on the moneyline paying +160
Houston 21 – Arizona 28
We knew the Cardinals offense was going to get a chance to shine against the suspect defense of the Houston Texans but it was the defense that gave Arizona the win. Kurt Warner and Larry Fitzgerald rediscovered some chemistry as they connected for two touchdowns in the first half and the Cardinals led 21-0 at halftime. In the second half, Matt Schaub shredded the Arizona defense tossing two TDs of his own and 371 yards for the game as the Texans tied the game at 21. Then the Arizona defense took over as Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie intercepted a Matt Schaub pass and returned the ball 49 yards for the touchdown. The Texans offense drove the field to the Cardinals 1 yard line where the Arizona defense held strong to preserve the win. Arizona covered the 6-point spread.
Atlanta 45 – San Francisco 10
Atlanta’s offense was unstoppable today as Matt Ryan completed two TD passes and Michael Turner rushed for three more as the Falcons crushed the 49ers 45-10. Roddy White set a franchise record with 198 receiving yards including a 90-yard TD catch.
Mike Singletary was not happy and let anyone in earshot know it. Singletary cussed out former 49ers and now Falcons offensive lineman Harvey Dahl during an Atlanta 2nd quarter drive. Singletary commented afterwards “I’ll put it this way: I wish I had more coaching etiquette,” this from a man who dropped his pants during the halftime break of his first game. We at Sportsbook Veteran want to tell Coach Singletary “Please keep doing crazy s#!t.” Atlanta won straight up, the line closed at +1 so there was no moneyline offered by most sportsbooks.
Jacksonville 0 – Seattle 41
A healthy Matt Hasselbeck means good things for the Seattle Seahawks as he threw four touchdown passes as Seattle shutout the Jacksonville Jaguars 41-0. Going into this game, we weren’t sure what to expect from either team as both have had big wins and disappointing losses. Jacksonville couldn’t get it going on offense and the defense couldn’t stop the Seahawks.
Indianapolis 31 – Tennessee 9
Peyton Manning in primetime is money. The Colts pushed their record to 5-0 SU and 4-1 against the spread by beating the 0-5 Tennessee Titans 31-9. Manning stayed in the game until he reached 309 passing yards, it’s the five straight games he’s reached the total and the most 300 yards games to start a season. The Titans never found the end zone, having to settle for field goals and field goals won’t get it done against the Colts.
For those of you asking for Vince Young, you got your wish as Young entered the game and failed to complete a pass on three attempts. The Colts covered the 3.5-point spread.
