No Luck in DC – Strasburg Out for 18 Months

The most talked about rookie in years, Stephen Strasburg of the Washington Nationals will undergo Tommy John surgery and he will be out of action at least a year and potentially 18 months healing from the procedure.

Strasburg has wowed crowds around the league with his 100mph fastball and his knee buckling changeup, so far this season Strasberg has gone 5-3 with an ERA of 2.91 and 92 Strikeouts in just 68 innings.

This is just another blow to the Washington DC fans, since the Montreal Expos were transformed into the Washington Nationals, DC fans have endured losing season after losing season. Since the move the Nats have lost 541 games in 5+ seasons and with their best pitcher out of action for a year and a half, that number will rise.

There had been hope growing with Strasberg and 2010 number one over all slugger Bryce Harper were supposed to be a the anchors for years to come for the Nationals but this put things on hold but it doesn’t destroy it.

The Tommy John Surgery, officially known as ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) reconstruction, is where a ligament is taken from the foot, knee, forearm or hamstring and used to repair the damaged UCL.  Former Pitcher Tommy John was the first player to have the procedure successfully performed on him, hence the name.

Some random Trivia for you, the second player to undergo  successful Tommy John surgery was Tom Candiotti.

This won’t affect the Nationals odds to win the World Series this year or even next as they are still a few years from competing.
