NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Odds

The NFL kicks off Thursday with the New Orleans Saints and the Minnesota Vikings in a rematch of their NFC championship classic from last season.  The NFL comes back with a full slate of games Sunday and two more games on Monday night. This is going to be a fantastic season with so many storylines.

One of the things I love every year is watching the new crop of rookies coming into the league. While it’s largely because I want to see how the talent will be for my favorite teams for the next couple of years but I also want to see how the teams did with their draft picks.

If you look at a team like the St. Louis Rams, they have had great draft positions in the past few years but none of their rookies have stepped up and improved their team. That could change though with Sam Bradford, Bradford has odds of 10/1 to win the NFL Rookie of the year but the dearth of talent on the Rams gives him few targets to catch his passes.

The three favorites to win the NFL Rookie of the Year are a trio of running backs, Ryan Matthews of the San Diego Padres at 3/1, the Buffalo Bills C.J. Spiller at 5/1 and Jahvid Best of the Detroit Lions. All three fall into great opportunities, the only drawback on Spiller and Matthews is that they will be sharing the backfield with established veterans and it could downgrade their real chances at the NFL Rookie of the Year award.

The guy I really like this year is Dexter McCluster at 12/1; McCluster is very similar to last year’s NFL rookie of the year Percy Harvin. He’s part of a new breed of Wide Receiver that are a transformed running back. With the Chiefs lack of depth, McCluster should be given plenty of opportunity to contribute this season.
