It’s Like Ashley Madison Without the Shame
We are 5 days away from the start of the 2009 NFL regular season, the excitement in the office is palpable, we’re making our futures picks, trash talking and ripping on everyone who disagrees. One of the things I love about gambling is that it allows you to support another team. You can turn your back on the team you grew up with without the shame of visiting Ashley Madison. I wouldn’t call it cheating but kind of like an Andrea Kirilenko freebie.
I grew up in southern Ontario and due to it’s proximity to Buffalo; I was by default a Bills fan. I have to admit being a Bills fan in the early 90’s was great; the team had four future hall of famers, Jim Kelly, James Lofton, Thurman Thomas and my personal favorite Bruuuce Smith, they played a no huddle offense that dominated the AFC. As you all know, they lost four straight Super Bowls but we liked to think of it as winning four straight AFC championships. I have to admit every time I hear “wide right” both my teeth and my ass clinches. I loved the Bills and I still do but as any Browns fan will tell you, it would be nice to support a winner.
I gambled a little in high school but it was just with friends and taking your buddy’s lunch money is nice, it doesn’t compare with putting your money in an online sportsbook and laying down a couple bucks on a game. Gambling has allowed me to cash in those Kirilenko freebies every Sunday; I can have an affair with the Patriots or the Dolphins with out feeling the guilt of cheating on my first love, the Bills.
Word of warning, after 10 years of placing my NFL bets with an online sportsbook, it has made me less of a Bills fan. After so many years of freedom, the lure of Buffalo has waned to the point that it will take a championship team for the sparks to fly again.
This season, I’m in love with the New England Patriots, the Green Bay Packers and I’ve been flirting with the Carolina Panthers and the Baltimore Ravens, although the Steelers are looking like they will put the most money in my pocket this year.
