Andre Dawson in the Hall as Les Expos

dawson-rainesAndre Dawson requested that his plaque be adorned with a Chicago Cubs hat but the MLB Hall of Fame committee did the right thing and chose the Expos hat for the ‘Hawk’.

When you compare Dawson’s stay with each team the choice becomes a no-brainer. Yes, he did win his 1987 MVP award with the last place Cubs but he played 11 seasons in Montreal, amassing six gold gloves, three Silver Sluggers, 1,575 of his 2,774 hits and the grand poutine award given out by the Quebec Cheese council for continued positive representation of cheese and gravy as part of a healthy diet. (Ok just checking if you were paying attention)

Dawson finished second in MVP voting the 1981, the first year the Expos World Series hopes were crushed.

Until recently, players could select their Hall of Fame cap but after Tampa Bay made some peculiar contract requests from Wade Boggs and Jose Canseco that right was taken away. It has been speculated that both players were offered bonuses if they chose a Tampa Bay hat when they were inducted into the hall of fame. Boggs chose the Boston Red Sox, Canseco wrote a book about Steroids and the Hall revoked the player’s right to chose.

It took Dawson a long time to make it into the hall, 11 years. I’ve never understood this, if a player is hall worthy year 11, he should be hall worthy year one. Honestly I don’t think Dawson is hall worthy.

This old geezer makes a compelling case

Personally of the Hall eligible Expos I’d say gimme some Tim Raines over the rest of them.
