Am I ready for a Commitment?

I used to have a team in a fantasy football keeper league, it really allowed for genuine rivalries to start among the owners. You would go into the season with the attitude of “Even if I don’t win, I just gotta beat that guy”.  If you remember from a past post I decided to cut down on the number of fantasy leagues I was in so I sold my keeper league team to an acquaintance, he knew a few of the guys in the league so it wasn’t a big deal.  I’ve missed playing in the league so when I heard there was a team available let my interest be known through another owner in the league.  After a couple days it was decided by the league that I wasn’t allowed to re-enter the league. It turns out the guy I sold my team to has won 2 of the 3 years and he’s looking at dominating again this year so the other owners are a little pissed I unleashed a shark into the league.

If you’ve never played in a keeper league let me explain how it works and we’ll explore a few others that will enhance your fantasy football experience.

Auction Leagues – Instead of drafting players in order, owners are given a set amount of money that they can use to bid on players to fill out their team. Be careful not to blow your cash early, as you have to fill an entire roster. What good are Adrian Peterson and Peyton Manning when the rest of your team is backups and rookies?

Dynasty League – This is the ultimate in fantasy football GM glory, once you have your team it’s yours. The only way you lose a player is through a cut or a trade. At the beginning of each season, only rookies are drafted into the league. This will give you the most realistic ownership experience.

Keeper League – like a dynasty except the number of players you keep on your team is generally limited to 3-5 players and the rest are thrown back in the pool to be redrafted the next season. You can do very well if you do your homework; by keeping 4 players, your league is essentially eliminating the first 4 rounds of the draft.

Survival League – I’ll include it in here because if you like fantasy football you’ll probably love survival football. How it works is each week you have to pick one team to win. Sounds easy enough but once you pick a team, you can’t pick that team again for the rest of the season. Where it gets interesting is when you haven’t planned correctly and you have to rest your survival on the Lions or the Raiders.

If anyone out there has an open spot for a keeper or better yet a Dynasty league let me know.
